Tween Masculine Birthday Cards

[click on photo to enlarge]

For some reason, I always have difficulty
creating a masculine card.

It may be that I love adorning my cards with fancy ribbons, buttons, glitter and more, that it throws me for a loop when that's not how to decorate a "manly" card. And what's even harder (in my opinion) is a card for a young man turning 12! He probably wouldn't want a "childish" one,
yet not "too-manly" either.

So, here's what I came up with.

Neither are too over-done,
and I think he'll be happy with these!

Thanks for stopping by today!
I hope these help inspire you to create more masculine cards!

Showcase Cooking: Potato Coated Pork Chops

I made these last week.

They turned out really good!

I like my pork chops several ways; either grilled, baked with apples & stuffing,
or coated in bread crumbs.

But last week, when I went to coat them in bread crumbs,
I realized I was completely out.

I looked through my cabinets and found a box of instant-mashed-potatoes, and remembered that I'd seen a recipe somewhere using the flakes as a coating for pork chops or chicken.

And here it is ~ compliments of TasteOfHome.com

Crispy Herb-Coated Pork Chops

Ingredients

* 1/3 cup butter, cubed
* 2/3 cup butter and herb-flavored mashed potato flakes
* 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
* 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
* 4 bone-in center-cut pork loin chops (6 ounces each and 1 inch thick)
* 2 tablespoons canola oil

Directions

* In a shallow bowl, melt butter. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the potato flakes, cheese and garlic powder. Dip chops, one at a time, in butter, then place in bag; seal and shake to coat.
* In a large skillet, cook chops in oil over medium heat for 7-8 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 160°. Yield: 4 servings.

Bon Appetit!

Budget Friendly Summer Vacation Ideas

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Are you dreaming of taking a Summer vacation with the family, but there just isn't much wiggle room in your budget?

How about these budget-friendly tips & tricks?:

1) Travel with another family!
Sis and I have done this a few times over the years, and it really saves each of us a ton of money when we are able to share the cost of a rental home. For example; a few years ago instead of each of us paying a hundred dollars or more per-night for a hotel room in Orlando, we rented a home big enough for all of us which cost the same as one hotel room!
[click here for vacation home rental info]

2) Go Camping!
Spending the night in a tent is one way to get back in touch with the great outdoors, and most campgrounds or parks charge a very nominal fee for tenting. If you own or have access to an actual camper, the fees cost a bit more, but are about 1/2 the price of a hotel room.
[click here for tent/camping info]

3) Take a StayCation!
We've discussed in a previous post what StayCations are all about and listed some ideas on having a successful one. Paying for a hotel room usually ends up using more than 1/2 of your vacation budget money. Spending the night in your own home allows you the freedom to take day trips, eat out less, and explore your own community.

4) Visit Family or Friends!
Does distance keep you away from your family and friends? Why not spend your vacation with them? You will not only save on accommodations, but you'll also be able to spend some quality time with those you don't see often. Before your trip, hop online and search for things-to-do in the area. With this kind of budget-friendly vacation, you'll be able to not only reconnect with family and friends, but do some sight-seeing as well.

Whatever you decide to do this summer, make sure you plan ahead! Check out any current or upcoming deals, bargains, or specials for the area or attraction you hope to visit. And don't forget coupons! No matter where Sis and I go, we almost always have a coupon! If you can't find them online, head on over to the local visitor's center and they usually have coupon books for most all attractions, restaurants, and more.

Have a fun, safe, Summer Vacation!

Showcase Book Review {Spring for Susannah}

Monday, June 20, 2011

As part of a Litfuse Blog Tour, I was selected to receive and review Spring for Susannah by Catherine Richmond.

Description: "With no prospects for marriage and her parents recently deceased, Susannah Underhill agrees to go west to the Dakota territory to marry her minister’s homesteading brother, Jesse. But Susannah is painfully shy, doesn’t see herself as worthy of love from either a husband or from God, and lives in constant fear that Jesse is going to ship her back to Detroit. In spite of her petite size and the fact that Susannah doesn’t look like she could survive on the prairie, Jesse quickly discovers that his new wife is a greater blessing than he even hoped for. The years she spent as her father’s veterinary assistant allow her to save Jesse’s ox and twin calves and to help neighboring farmers with their animals. But Susannah’s feelings of unworthiness are deeply rooted, and she can’t believe that Jesse’s praise—or the tenderness and love he shows—could possibly last. The thawing of her heart seems almost as distant as Spring in the midst of the winter blanketing the Dakota prairie."

Review: As this was the author's debut release I did not know what to expect and I am happy to report, that overall, I liked her writing style. There were a few moments where some of the historical facts felt a little more forced than natural. Happily, the story line quickly moved on to better things and I got past them.

When Susannah and Jesse first meet, she is a woman lacking in confidence, in self-esteem and in faith. He, on the other hand, has those traits in abundance. But when tragedy strikes their farm his thinking is turned upside-dwon and he leaves in order to find work. As the months pass along, the notes from Jesse stop, until at last it seems he has met his fate. When everyone surrounding Susannah, even those closest to her try to encourage her to give in and let go of Jesse, she stands her ground, never giving up hope. Before he left, she grew confident in his love which also allowed her to feel both comfortable and safe enough to be herself. In the end, her prayers are answered in the way she hoped they would be.

To me, the main lesson from this story is one of hope and how tightly hope is wound to faith. As Susannah's faith grew, so did her hope. Without that combination she never would have lived the life that was meant for her. And she never would have known the blessings that spring time, a time of hope for all things new, can bring.

To celebrate her debut novel, Catherine and her publisher, Thomas Nelson, have teamed up to give away a Spring For Susannah Prize Package worth over $150!

One grand prize winner will receive:

* A brand new Latest Generation KINDLE with Wi-Fi and Pearl Screen

* Spring for Susannah by Catherine Richmond (for KINDLE)
To enter just click one of the icons below and then tell your friends! But hurry, giveaway ends on June 27th. Winner will be announced on Tuesday, June 28th at 5 PM (6PM MST, 7PM CST, & 8PM EST) during Catherine's Spring for Susannah Book Club Party on Facebook! Catherine will be rustling up some fun for the party - she'll be chatting about the story behind her novel, hosting a book club chat, testing your mail-order bride trivia skills, and giving away some GREAT prizes! Don't miss the fun and tell your friends!

Friday Photo Fun {Mockingbird Eggs}

Friday, June 17, 2011

Nature photography is on of my favorite past-times. Cheryl lives in a rural area, so I am often roaming around her yard and neighborhood for things to photograph. My brother-in-law has even begun to point out things to me that he has spotted, things he thinks I should take a look at.
[paper by DBS DigiScraps; cluster by Raspberry Road Designs]

While looking at her Crape Myrtle tree, I saw a nest. I put my camera over the nest as best I could without disturbing it or the limbs that it sat on. This is the best of the photos I took and even it is a little blurry, but I had to hurry as the momma bird was sitting nearby.

I can't wait to see the little birds after they have hatched!

Do you have a favorite type of photography and if so, what is it?

Showcase {Review} Heartsy

Heartsy - Daily deals on fabulous handmade items, at least 50% off.

Recently I came across a wonderful website called Heartsy. All you do is sign up for their free Daily Deals newsletter, then you can view the daily deals on wonderful handmade items from Etsy stores. The deals may range in value, but all are at least 50% off. A big bonus - if you sign up now, you will get $5 in Heartsy credit!

I recently purchased two different Etsy store vouchers from Heartsy to be used as birthday gifts. I paid $8 for a $16 store credit to Zesty Notion and I paid $8 for a $25 store credit to Thistle Delight Soapworks. With having a really tight budget, this was a great help in stretching my dollars and I love that it helps support handmade crafters!

Becoming A Grandmother

Sunday, June 12, 2011

I have some amazing news to share...

I'm going to be a Grandma!

Since this will be my first grandbaby, I decided to check into some books on becoming a Grandmother, and here's what I found at Amazon.com...

How To Be The Perfect Grandma by Bryna Paston

Editorial Review:
"How to Be the Perfect Grandmother is a humorous, anecdotal gift book for grandmothers, grandmothers-to-be, grandmother wannabes, anyone who has a grandmother-and, of course, grandfathers."

"This delightful guide gives new grandmas clear direction on how to navigate foreign territory. Celebrated columnist Adair Lara advises on how to choose a decent name (Oopsie? Boopsie?). She outlines how to give advice without getting a Dr. Sears guide chucked at the head. She offers wise counsel on how to stay on the parents' good side (hint: don't say anything, ever). Hilarious in its blunt truisms, The Granny Diaries steers around the shoals of grandma sentimentality. And yet, having fallen madly in love with her own grandchildren, Adair affirms that the years after the big G truly are golden."

"This book will help you find your answer and assist you in developing a plan for your grandparenting. It will dispel the myths and "tell it like it is." You'll learn that other grandparents feel just as you do. It will guide you to become aware of the possibilities, encourage you to trust your intuition, and teach you how to set goals so that you can make the most of this essential role. Just as babies don't come with instructions for parents, they certainly don't come with instructions for grandparents!"

Becoming a Grandmother: A Life Transition
by Sheila Kitzinger

Product Description:

"Kitzinger, a social anthropologist, explores the experience of grandmotherhood both personally and historically based on detailed research."

Funny, You Don't Look Like A Grandmother
by Lois Wyse

Product Description:

"Here it is! A "grandmarvelous" feast of anecdotes, observations, poetry and prose that celebrates the glories of Grandmothering! An eight-time expert in the field, Lois Wyse explores with wit, warmth, and candor such weighty modern-day dilemmas as What to Name the Grandmother...How to Win the Granny Wars...and reveals the truth about that credit card-toting phenomenon Shopalong Cassidy-The Plastic Grandma. The perfect book for the Nana of today, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry...it will make you want to run out and buy something nice for your grandchild!"
